LuzBoa: Lisboa transformed by the light

Those who visit Lisboa from September 21 to 30 will be invited to discover the city through the art of light. Dozens of artistic light installations have been created for this 2nd LuzBoa Festival, International Biennial of Light, along three walking tours through the city’s most important and historic areas.

This urban art event offers visitors and residents an opportunity to enjoy the most poetic experiences of Lisboa’s most famous public areas and buildings. The “Aristocratic Lisboa” route from Príncipe Real to Camões Square (Chiado) will be highlighted in red. This walk presents an illuminated structure exactly like an electrocardiogram, in a work by Czech artist Jana Matejkova. Entitled “Heart” this work has been designed to recreate the heartbeat of the city. Red lanterns will light up the S. Pedro de Alcântara gardens to highlight its current state: closed for remodelling work. There will also be projections on buildings in the Chiado and a sculpture installation in São Carlos Square. Entitled “Trojan Horse”, by the sculptor Bruno Peinado, this work shines and rotates on a base providing a reflection of the senses. The second route, known as “Pombaline Lisboa” has green as its predominant colour and links Chiado with Santa Justa, in the Baixa area. At the former Armazéns do Chiado shopping centre there will be a “forest” of light entitled “Sur Nature” by Miguel Chevalier. The “Old Lisboa” route will be lit up in blue and will go from the São Cristóvão Stairway to Alfama. A sound intervention will accompany visitors along the way, with fado songs and projections of portraits of local inhabitants. Finally at Costa do Castelo there will be the «2004-Light, Color and no Sound» installation by Pedro Cabral Santos. Similarly a monumental photographic work at the Santa Luzia belvedere presents a feminine figure with the starlit Lisboa sky as a backdrop.
This LuzBoa 2006 festival features lighting original projects by artists from Spain, France, England, Czech Republic, Switzerland, USA and Brazil, amongst others. Further information about event calendar, conferences and workshops available at www.luzboa.com.
